Rights

A couple of other MNW writers (Matt Curran and Frances Garrood - see Friends in the sidebar) recently suggested that I might be able to get back the rights to Another Time and Place from MNW, and thus follow other avenues (like self-publishing) to get it into bookstores here in Oz. Initially, I thought I wouldn’t be able to but on further enquiry I discovered that I can, and MNW are now in the process of reverting the rights to me. Hooray!

So now I have to look into self-publishing and negotiate with Angus and Robertson, which is all very exciting, especially as I had really begun to think that Another Time and Place was dead in the water.

That is good news, and given that you know Angus & Robertson are keen, it looks positive. I believe Lucy McCarraher self-published her second novel recently, so it might be worth discussing with her if you haven’t done so already. A friend of mine has just self-published her first book as well, and she decided to go for two editions: the standard PB and a limited edition HB, the latter being signed in her own blood (she’s a horror writer, and it’s a vampire novel!). I’m not suggesting that you start bleeding into inkwells, but perhaps there is a market for limited editions with something special and ‘appropriate’ about them?

    Best of luck!

    Thanks Faye,

Yeah, I’ve been in touch with Lucy and she’s been very helpful.
The blood as ink idea sounds interesting but isn’t really my thing. Maybe bullet holes and shrapnel would be more appropriate?

    Take care

    Excellent news, Sam

Keep us updated on how it all goes. Adding to Faye’s comments, Tim Stretton - also with MNW - self published his first two books so that’s another writer you could contact.

With a major bookseller (THE major bookseller in Oz, aren’t they?) already snapping it up, you’re well ahead of the curve.

    Good luck with yours, Sam
