Audio Edition

My complimentary copy of the audio edition of Another Time and Place dropped through my letterbox over the weekend. It was so exciting to see all those shiny new CDs with my name on them, but a very strange feeling to hear my words in someone else’s voice. I really like the way Trudy Harris reads it, but it’s weird because when I write I hear the words out loud, in my voice, or the versions of my voice that I mentally assign to characters, so to hear another, very different voice, is quite disconcerting.

But wonderful, all the same!

I can imagine. One of the questions that stumps me most is ‘Who would play [insert character here] in a film?’. To me, that’s like asking who would play me, or my close friends and family in a film - my characters look and sound like themselves, and it’s really weird trying to fit another person into their roles.

Congrats on the audio release! :D

    Thanks Faye.

Have you heard anything yet about the audio edition of Cover the Mirrors? Do you know yet when it’s coming out?

The film adaptation question is a strange one - some of my characters are very easy for me to cast and others completely impossible. I have actually written a couple of characters with particular actors in mind (though not in Another Time and Place) and have found it’s been quite helpful in visualising the details of expressions and mannerisms. The characters have still developed as very much their own persons though, and I know of other writers who do similar things. The main character of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin (whose name escapes me for the moment) is apparently based on a waitress Louis de Bernieres observed in a Greek cafe when he was on holiday.

How’s this for a delayed reply?! I’m so sorry - I’m really bad at remembering to keep up with any web-based conversation that doesn’t send me email pokes when someone replies, so I didn’t think to check until I just visited your blog to see how you were keeping. So sorry! :O

Anyway, I’m not sure yet when the audio edition of CTM’s coming out, although I think it will be some time this year. Not sure who’s reading it either - Diane offered me the chance to do it, but I would have made the most frightening mess of it, so I figured it was best left to the experts!

Glad the play-writing is coming along well. Have you applied for access to the MNWers group blog yet? (http://macmillannewwriters.blogspot.com/ - Matt Curran and David Isaak act as gatekeepers.) I’m sure you could promote your plays in there as well, as and when it becomes necessary.

    Hope all’s well with you!

You aren’t the only one with tardy replies! Sorry - but it’s taken us a while to get ourselves sorted and we only got internet access at home a short while ago, which has been a complete and utter pain in the arse.

No, I wouldn’t have wanted to read my book for the audio edition either, so I know where you’re coming from!

I haven’t got involved with the MNWers group blog yet but it’s on my (long) list of things to do.

    Later,
    Sam

Goodness, that must have been quite a move! How are things going in Oz?
