Decisions
Having ummed and aahhed and talked to many people about it since I heard from Will yesterday, I’ve finally made a decision about where to go next.
The magnitude of the rewrite that After the Twelfth requires really does mean that I need a while to think about it. I know what needs to be done, but it’s going to take time for the how to become apparent. That’s a process that can’t be rushed; the wheels are now turning in the back of my mind and the inspiration will come when it comes, in fits and starts most probably. So that’s one good reason for not getting straight back into it.
The other reason, of course, is Thin Ice, which is where my heart is at the moment. And I’m a firm believer in following my heart.

Hi Sam,
I’m sure this is the right way for you to go and I agree with you about following the heart and instinct. I’ve moved on to novel number three, in between attempts to find an agent. If I did find one, and they could give me clear guidance about what was needed to make Kindred Spirits saleable, I’d return to that immediately. But chance would be a fine thing!
Good luck with Thin Ice. Are you saying what it’s about?

Hi Lucy
Thanks for the support.
Thin Ice is another World War II tale - it follows the story of two men returning to England from the battlefields of Italy, and their struggle to resume old relationships and form new ones. It’s still very much in its early stages, so beyond that, I’m still kind of discovering myself where it’s going to go. I have written a first draft, but it was written in the first person, through the eyes of the wife of one of the men. It didn’t really work like that, but as I’m now rewriting it in the third person, using the three different perspectives, it’s turning into something quite different.
Better get back to it now Jake’s back at school…

Good to see you forging ahead on the new one, Sam. And, apropos of your new work, a quote from Emerson:
“When skating over thin ice, our safety is in our speed.”
Happy writing!

Thanks David - I like the quote, but I’m not sure it really applies to the book…

I usually apply it to the writing of the book, myself–though I probably spend more time on thin ice than a sensible writer ought to.
