The Second Book

Having finally screwed up the courage to submit After the Twelfth to Will at Macmillan, it was a little disappointing to receive an immediate Out of Office Auto Reply with the news that he’s off for the rest of the week. Damn. I should have sent it yesterday. So I guess I’ll just have to wait a little bit longer than I hoped for his comments, and just get on with writing Thin Ice.

I know what you mean about the second book nerves - I’m editing mine now (and researching my third book - not ready to start writing it yet) and biting my fingernails madly in the process.

Best of luck with it all.

    Hi Faye,

Thanks for the good wishes and good luck with yours. Is the one you’re researching historical too? I’m getting myself immersed in World War 2 again, which keeps me occupied and happy, although I’ve yet to work out where it all fits in to the story. I guess the details I need will gradually emerge from the mass of information I’m now accumulating.

And I have to say, the net has made this all a lot easier than it was when I started writing Another Time and Place a whole 8 years ago.

Yes, all my stuff’s Victorian-set historical fiction. The researching does get easier in terms of the general stuff, as I’ve found myself building up a sort of mental database of Victorian info, but with that being said, I’m going to need to get myself a bunch of good maps of the country before I start on the third book, because the main character travels around a lot. The internet is pretty good for researching, but I haven’t managed to find any maps online yet, which is a pity. Ah well.

    Ah, yes, the second book…

Congratulations on getting the courage up, Sam. I’m still ploughing through the second draft - but it should be done by the summer. Not sure whether I should be nervous or not - I guess acception is in the lap of the Gods, or in the lap of Editors!

Anyway, fingers crossed that it goes well. I understand MNW are scheduled up to January 2008 now, so hopefully at some point later that year “After the Tweflth” will see print!

    Take care

    Hi Matt

Actually, now it’s done, I’ve stopped worrying about it - I’m now getting more concerned about what I’m doing with book no.3. I’m a bit bogged down in research at the moment, and it’s just going to take time for the relevant bits to surface. But I’m excited about it and that’s the main thing.

    All the best

    Hi Faye,

I was in my local reference library yesterday doing research and one of the librarians mentioned accessing O/S maps from the Second World War. I just re-read your comment and thought there’s a good chance your local library would have maps from the Victorian period as well. Worth a try.

Good luck with it - I don’t know about you, but I love doing the research. I quite missed it when I was writing After the Twelfth - it’s like an instant portal into the world of the novel.

Ah, that is worth a try! Will give it a go - thanks.

Oh yes, I love researching. I get to read about fascinating subjects and call it work!

Hi - I came across your website by chance via the Historical Novelists Society. I don’t know if you’re still interested in having an agent, or whether you’re quite content without these days, but I’d be happy to hear more about your new novel if you want to get in touch. My email address is as above. Best wishes, R Heath

  9. samgrosser Says:

Hi Rupert, thanks for getting in touch.
As you know, I’m currently waiting for MNW to get back to me about my second book - if they accept it, the contract, as I’m sure you’re aware, is non-negotiable, so there’s no real role for an agent.
If, on the other other hand, they reject it, then I will definitely be looking for an agent and I’ll contact you then, although I do already have another agent who is also interested.
Anyway, thanks again for making contact,
    All the best
    Sam

Hi, Samantha. I’m awaiting arrival of your novel in my mailbox (I’m in California, so delivery from MNW is far from intantaneous).

I’m a fellow MNWer, with my book coming in September. Would you mind if I linked to this blog from mine?

    Good luck on Book Two.

Hi David - thanks for getting in touch. And thanks for buying my novel - I hope you enjoy it when it finally reaches you.

I’ve had a look at your blog and I think it’s really interesting - of course you can link to mine. Your book sounds fascinating and I wish you all the best with it.

    Keep in touch,
    Sam
