First Review

I had word from the publisher today of my very first review, in the Big Issue in the North, no less. Here are the best bits.

“meticulously researched story”

“unflinching, sympathetic treatment of the situation of an unmarried mother”

“feels like it could have been written back in 1945″

“the language and local colour have an authentic ring and there are echoes of Boys’ Own-style adventure stories, and even, in places, Nevil Shute’s good old fashioned storytelling.”

Things are looking good.

    Hi Samantha…
You don’t know me (apologies for that rather horror-flickesque opening line), but I am a fellow MNWer (or MNWer-to-be, anyway!). In fact, I’m a fellow MNW historical novelist, to be precise! My Victorian era novel, Cover the Mirrors, is (provisionally) set to be published in November ‘07, and I’ve been Googling existing MNW authors to see what they’ve been up to, so I thought I’d just comment on your blog to tell you that it’s been very interesting for me to read. Congratulations on Another Time and Place, and thanks for posting some of your experiences online!

    Hi Faye,

Thanks for getting in touch - it’s always good to hear from other MNWers (or even MNWers to be). You must be very excited that your novel’s been accepted. Congratulations, and believe me, the year till it comes out will both fly, and take for ever.
I’m glad you’ve found the blog interesting - I had a quick look at your very handsome website before I wrote this - I’ll peruse it in more detail later.
    Do keep in touch,
    Sam

    Hi Sam,

I don’t think it’s fully sunk in yet - doing things like writing author bios and acknowledgments is slowly making it feel ‘real’, but it still feels so incredible!

I’m glad you like my site - it’s very basic HTML-wise, but it does the job.

I’ll definitely keep in touch, and thanks again!

    Hi Faye,

It didn’t really begin to sink in for me until I actually held a copy of the book in my hands. But the thing that most made me feel like an “Author” was seeing the window display in the Clifton Bookshop with stacks of my book, and showcards with my picture advertising the launch. The thought of it still makes me smile.

Good luck with it all, and enjoy it.

    Sam

Isn’t it strange to get something you’ve pursued for so long? I’d almost absorbed being a writer who was TRYING to get published into my identity - adjusting it to being a soon-to-be published writer is weird and wonderful at the same time.

    Hi Bunny,

Thank you, but congratulations for the website should go to Nick - he’s done a really fine job with it, and I think it looks fabulous too - simple, clean, and classy. Thank you Nick.

It’s lovely to hear from you - we’re missing Aus horribly now that the mornings are so dark, and I can’t believe a year has passed since we saw you last. How’s the hula hoop teaching going? I may be able to write a mean story, but hula hooping just seems to be beyond me:-).

I hope we get to see you soon too,

    Luv Sam

I hope the book arrives with you soon and that you enjoy it.
